What We Do

Overview

We are involved in the production, processing, distribution, and retail of food products. By controlling every stage of the food production chain, we ensure a consistent supply from farm to table. This is crucial in the cold food chain, where optimal temperatures from processing to distribution and retail are essential for quality. Additionally, our commitment to sustainability drives all aspects of our business.

Production

We own three farms – Huntley, Chiawa and Mpongwe – for crop and animal production. Our large, irrigated and dry land row cropping operations focus on maize and soya beans during summer, and wheat and maize during winter. Part of the harvested crop is used in our feedlots at Kalundu Dairy and Huntley Farm, while the rest provides the raw materials for processing in our animal feed and flour milling businesses. At Huntley Farm, we also grow fodder crops – grass and silage – for the dairy and beef cattle.

Processing

We have different plants, all ISO 22,000 certified, involved in processing and adding value to our agricultural produce:

  • Abattoirs and meat processing plants for beef, pork and poultry.
  • Dairy processing plant for milk, butter, cheese and yoghurt.
  • Two wheat mills and three bakeries for flour and bread.
  • A tannery and shoe plant to produce leather and footwear from the cattle hides byproduct of our beef abattoirs.
  • Two Novatek mills in Lusaka and Mpongwe for stockfeed, with extruders at both plants for dog and fish feed.

Distribution

We own and operate one of the largest transport fleets in Zambia, with over 200 trucks, giving us control over logistics and distribution. Our fleet includes:

  • Open caged, compartmentalised cattle trucks.
  • Special purpose, environmentally controlled vehicles for day-old chicks.
  • Tankers for bulk feed transport.
  • Refrigerator trucks with cooling units for temperature-controlled products.
  • Ambient temperature trucks for processed products like flour and stockfeed.

All our trucks feature Zambeef branding. Most of the trucks and trailers transporting processed products are branded with one of our many Zambeef brands or products, a few are co-branded with Shoprite, while our animal feed trucks display Novatek or Novadog branding.

We are committed to on-time and in-full delivery and continuously strive to improve our logistics operations. Our control room monitors every moving vehicle to ensure food quality and safety throughout the supply chain. Our vehicles are well maintained and inspected at the required regular intervals, while our drivers receive targeted, in-house training, including defensive driving. Due to these standards, we are permitted to travel at night. The Road Transport and Safety Agency also audits us annually.

For sustainability, we keep our trucks full to reduce emissions per kilogramme and we use approved, environmentally friendly chemicals to clean our trucks.

Retail

We have a retail presence across all 10 provinces of Zambia, with outlets in major urban locations, and small rural and mining towns. This includes ordinary butcheries, macro-outlets offering our full range of products under one roof, and three wholesale outlets in Lusaka, Kitwe and Kasumbalesa, all owned and operated by Zambeef. All our retail outlets are equipped with chilled and frozen storage capacity and chilled display counters to maintain the integrity and quality of our cold chain food products. We complement our portfolio of products offered in our outlets with relevant products supplied by third party suppliers, to guarantee provision of a complete essentials’ food basket for our customers. This includes sugar, mealie meal, salt, cooking oil, fish, margarine, noodles, rice, and spices, among others.

Additionally, we have in-house butcheries that we operate in Nigeria and Ghana. Our products are also available to end-consumers through our partnership with Shoprite in Zambia, where we run the in-store butcheries on their behalf and supply our grocery range to their supermarkets.
