As the largest integrated agri-business in Zambia, Zambeef Products Plc is an integral part of the local agricultural supply chain, creating around 300,000 direct and indirect jobs. We believe in partnerships to support and supplement our internal production, ensuring only the best products reach the end consumer.
Farmers
We are the largest business partner of farmers in the rural areas of Zambia, with more than 100,000 small-scale farmer and agent affiliations. We promote the procurement of locally produced raw materials and lead the way in poverty alleviation, food security, job creation and sustainable development of rural economies.
We connect our nation's small-scale farmers to markets across Zambia and the region by buying livestock from them. We maintain over 400 small-scale pig farmers that supply 100% of our pigs. We have partnered with Musika, a non-profit company mandated to stimulate and support private investment in the lower-end Zambian agricultural market, to develop the livestock sector and reduce poverty.
Additionally, 16% of our total raw milk requirements is supplied by a single commercial farmer, while 21% is sourced from small-scale farmers comprising six cooperatives at milk collection centres and 13 individual suppliers. Our Novatek subsidiary buys a significant amount of soya beans and maize from small-scale farmers and relies on them for broiler growing. We currently have 17 regular outgrowers that supply approximately 35% of our broiler needs.
Suppliers
We collaborate with a variety of suppliers, including technology partners and fuel companies, who are integral to our business operations. 60% of our suppliers are local SMEs, driving local development. Our Novatek subsidiary partners with international suppliers of macropacks to source the essential nutrients, supplements, and vitamins required for our stockfeed.
Additionally, Novatek works closely with nutritionists, veterinarians, and pharmaceutical companies to ensure the quality and nutritional balance of our stockfeed.
Producers
Besides our partnerships with small-scale farmers, we have established dual contracts with our soya millers in Lusaka and the Copperbelt, where we provide them with soya beans for crushing and production of edible oils. In turn, we buy back the by-products of this process – the soya cakes and meal – for our stockfeed production They also supply us with packaged cooking oil to sell as part of our essential foods’ basket in our retail outlets.
Distributors
While we sell finished products directly to the end consumer through our extensive retail networks, we also operate the butcheries across 41 Shoprite outlets nationwide, ensuring the delivery of high-quality protein products supplied from our own abattoirs. Our subsidiary, Zamchick supplies chicken products to numerous Hungry Lion outlets in Zambia.
